Company Information

ExxonMobil, the largest publicly traded international oil and gas company, uses technology and innovation to help meet the world’s growing energy needs. ExxonMobil holds an industry-leading inventory of resources, is the largest refiner and marketer of petroleum products, and its chemical company is one of the largest in the world.

Focus on Women's Empowerment

Reflecting its strong belief in the important role women play as catalysts for economic advancement, ExxonMobil launched an exciting gender initiative in 2005. The Women’s Economic Opportunity Initiative helps to improve economic opportunities for women in the developing world. Strengthening communities where all citizens are valuable and productive members of society helps create a stable and prosperous operating business environment. And supporting women’s skills development allows companies to have access to the best talent for employee recruitment and supply chain development.

ExxonMobil’s Women’s Economic Opportunity Initiative strives to build the next generation of female business leaders and entrepreneurs, reduce the barriers to women’s economic participation, and help identify and deploy technologies for women. The initiative works with a wide range of partners around the world, including Africare, Ashoka’s Chanagemakers, CEDPA (Centre for Population and Development Activities), Coady International Institute, Council on Foreign Relations, Harvard Kennedy School Women and Public Policy Program, International Center for Research on Women (ICRW), Seeds of Peace and Vital Voices. To date, ExxonMobil has invested more than US$30 million in programs ranging from leadership development and skills training to mentoring and network development to helping foster an enabling environment for women’s economic advancement.

The company has supported in-country projects in Angola, Chad, Colombia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Qatar and Thailand and enabled women from 64 developing countries to participate in leadership and skills development programs. These programs have reached thousands of women directly, who have subsequently trained thousands of other women in their communities. ExxonMobil country affiliates play an integral role in shaping these investments by ensuring that projects align with national needs and government priorities.

To support the initiative, ExxonMobil created an internal advisory group comprised of senior women executives. Members serve as corporate ambassadors, help guide and shape the company's in this areas and participate in several initiatives including the FORTUNE/US State Department Global Women’s Mentoring Partnership.

In 2010, in partnership with Ashoka’s Changemakers and the ICRW, ExxonMobil launched Women | Tools | Technology: Building Opportunities & Economic Power, an innovative global challenge that will identify transformative solutions for promoting women’s economic advancement through technology.
