Member Background

Kristin Clemet, Chair, was educated as a business economist. She is the Director of Civita – Centre for Business and Society. Ms Clemet has long political experience, including service as Minister for Education and Research from 2001-05, Deputy Director for the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise (1998-2001), Minister of Labor and Government Administration (1989-90) and a Member of the Storting (Norwegian parliament) (1989-93). She also holds other directorships, and has considerable boardroom experience.

Company Information

Norfund commenced operations in 1998 and is a development financial institution which invests risk capital in profitable private enterprises in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Balkans, focusing on poor countries which are not financed by traditional aid or attractive to commercial players. They invest in viable projects that balance economic, social and environmental considerations. Norfund insists that its operations contribute or generate something in addition to that which would otherwise have taken place through the market. More than 147,000 people are employed by enterprises in which Norfund has invested.

Focus on Women's Empowerment

Norfund believes that women's participation is critical to economic growth, poverty alleviation and fostering sustainable development. Therefore, they assess company policies/efforts to create equal opportunities and promote female managers. This is particularly relevant in its microfinance and small-enterprise financing projects.

Ensuring equal opportunities is an important guideline for Norfund's human resources policy. The Norfund management team is comprised of one woman and three men. Females account for 36.8 per cent of the institution's workforce, and 60 percent of permanent directors.
