Member Background

Mona Zulficar, Senior Partner and Chair of the Executive Committee. Ms. Zulficar joined the firm in 1976 as an Economic Analyst and Office Manager. In June 2004, she was elected as the Managing Partner, and in January 2006, Chair of the Executive Committee. Ms. Zulficar heads the Banking and Capital Markets Group and is recognized internationally in almost all the legal directories as the most prominent lawyer in Egypt in the fields of banking, project finance, investment banking and M&A transactions. The firm has a long track record of handling human rights and women's rights cases on a pro bono basis, as part of its corporate social responsibility work. It has successfully defended constitutional and human rights and created significant precedents which lead to change of discriminatory provisions of certain laws.

Shalakany Law Office was founded in 1912. The firm is the oldest and largest corporate law firm in Egypt, and one of the largest firms in the Middle East. With over 80 attorneys, including 17 partners and a support staff of over 120 professionals, the firm provides services to multinational, Egyptian and regional clients through its offices in Egypt and Dubai.

 

Focus on Women's Empowerment

Complementing her professional activities with a commitment to community activism, Ms. Zulficar has been an active advocate for human rights and women's rights in Egypt and internationally. She is a member of the National Council for Human Rights and has recently been elected as a member and Vice Chair of the UN Human Rights Council Advisory Committee. Since the early 1980's, she has lead a number of successful campaigns to ensure equal rights for women, such as the New Marriage Contract and Equal Rights to Divorce Law (2000); a new non-governmental organizations law (2002); the appointment of the first woman judge in Egypt (2003); Equal Rights under the Nationality Law (2004); a new Family Courts Law and Family Insurance Law (2004). She is presently campaigning for a new Equal Opportunity and Non Discrimination Law. Ms. Zulficar holds a bachelor degree in economics and political Science from Cairo University and a law degree from Mansoura University.
