Member Background

Peter Sands, CEO, was previously Group Finance Director having been appointed as a Group Executive Director in May 2002. Before Standard Chartered PLC, Peter was a Director with McKinsey & Co. where, since 1988, he worked extensively in the banking and technology sectors in a wide range of international markets. He was elected a partner of McKinsey in 1996 and became Director in 2000.

Standard Chartered PLC is a financial institution based in London, UK that has operated for over 150 years. The group employs 75,000 people, representing 115 nationalities, in more than 1,750 branches and outlets located in over 70 countries, including Asia, Africa and the Middle East. 2007 operating income was US$11 billion and total assets were US$329 billion.

 

Focus on Women's Empowerment

Standard Chartered works to improve gender diversity for its customers, people and communities. Client initiatives include a Women's Account - a bank account designed specifically to meet the financial needs of women. In 2006, Standard Chartered launched GOAL - a new community investment program in India which aims to empower underprivileged women through the vehicles of sport and unique leadership courses. The program aims to reach more than 2,500 young women in India by 2010. Standard Chartered also has a partnership to build emerging female leaders' capacity and networks with Vital Voices and is a member of the Global Banking Alliance for Women. In 2008, Standard Chartered provided US$385 million in credit and financial instruments to 52 microfinance institution partners in 14 countries that will impact the lives of 2.6 million people. 80 percent of these are women.
