Member Background

Sung-joo Kim, Chairperson & CEO Sungjoo Group/MCM Group, has been involved in the fashion industry for more than 20 years. She studied at Yonsei University and Amherst College, London School of Economics and Harvard University. Sung-joo was chosen as one of the '1997 Global Leaders for Tomorrow' by the World Economic Forum; has been named one of the seven most powerful women in Asia by Asiaweek; and one of the 'Top 50 Women to Watch' by the Wall Street Journal. In 2008, she was inducted into the 'Enterprising Women Hall of Fame' in US, which recognizes a lifetime of remarkable achievements, including building a successful business, assisting nonprofit organizations, and nurturing the women's business community.

 

Company Information

Sungjoo Group (Korea) and MCM Group (Germany) currently operates more than 100 high-fashion retail stores in Korea and distributes to more than 150 retailers globally. The Sungjoo Group recently acquired MCM Group, a German based high-end luxury brand, which produces and distributes luggage, handbags and other fashion goods. Gross annual sales of the group in 2008 exceeded more than US$200 million. Founder of the Sungjoo Group, Ms Kim started the business in the late 1980s.

Mrs. Kim firmly believes in the power of women to improve global society and is actively involved in many prominent women's organizations, including the Global Summit of Women, Harvard University's Women's Leadership Board, World Women's Forum, Women's International Networking, and others. Her company gives back by mentoring and inspiring women and leading many humanitarian initiatives.
