Attracting and Retaining Top Talent

  • Women in the U.S. are graduating in higher numbers from college than men and will make up 61.9% of the workforce by 2015. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)
  • Yet women are leaving the workforce at twice the rate of men. 52% of female scientists, engineers, and technologists working in the U.S. drop out of their chosen professions over time. (The Athena Factor: Reversing the Brain Drain in Science, Engineering, and Technology) Reasons include lack of flexibility, the glass ceiling, unhappiness with the work culture, and feeling unchallenged by their jobs.
  • Companies that allow women to thrive retain talented female employees more easily, which is crucial given the growing shortage of talented workers. Europe is projected to have a shortfall of 24 million people in the active workforce by 2040. If female employment rates were raised to the same level as men's, the shortfall would be only 3 million – 8 times less. (McKinsey)
